Becoming a vet...

Ever dreamed of becoming a vet? Well, you need lot more than just animal love for that, find out what! Scroll to unlock some cool tips and tricks that will actually take you a step closer to your dream career!

Love animals

Animal love is one of the most important trait of a to-be vet. Curing animal friends is about caring for them. Are you the teenager who doesn’t have a pet, but never forgets to feed some strays? Or probably you’re that careful driver who would look out for clueless animals walking on the street. Your heart goes out for an abandoned puppy and you probably end up taking it home. Well, there are probably some animals or insects that you're scared of, so offer them a hand of friendship; but only to the non-poisonous ones!

Get a pet

Though it is necessary, love for animals is not the only thing you need to become a good vet. Animals may seem cute but they’re quite a high maintenance ! One of the easiest way to give yourself a practice is to get a pet. A pet will be the perfect way to invest your time, effort, money and attention. It will not only be a lovely company, it will also take you a step closer to your goal !

While selecting a cute company, try avoiding the cliché of dogs and cats ; go for bunnies, birds, even turtles! A squirrel will need more maintenance and attention than any other pet. Although consider getting a squirrel only of you can match it’s enthusiasm.

Spend time with a vet

Find a local vet to spend time with. Ask innovative questions; observe different animals; note their mannerisms, habits, foods, comfort gestures etc. Help the vet, and you might as well be looking at the face of your dream career. Observe how the vet communicates with his / her clients. As the pet owners aren’t usually professionals, they do not exactly understand the condition of their pet and may make mistakes while taking its care. Being a responsible vet, your job will also include making sure that your clients keep up with you. This activity will improve your familiarity with various animals and you will get a glimpse of your future! There are various fields in being a vet again, so doing all these things and staying in that environment, experiencing what its like, will give you a fair idea of how the future is going to be. It’ll help you understand what type of vet you want to be.

Educational facilities

The most important part of your vet education is veterinary school. Get a bachelors degree in science. This is usually a 4 year course. Some people prefer directly entering vet school by credits, but completing this 4 year course is much better. Along with this, volunteer in animal shelters and other such activities. This will give you a much better experience with all kinds of animals. After this, many people don't go for internships, but doing it is preferable as you learn tons of new things. It will also be a good part of your resume.

Career and salary

There are various fields in veterinary again, so choosing between them is not going to be easy. As of 2020, the median salary is around 95,000. But again, salaries depend on many things, like the place you work in, the years of experience you’ve got, your expertise, etc. Being a specialist in one of the fields will obviously gain you a higher salary and you might get recruited in hospitals or large medical institutes for animal care. You can open a private clinic, go onto working in private or corporate hospitals, become a veterinary nurse or go into academic teaching for amateur vets. Your job depends your skills and knowledge in the veterinary world.
